Formerly known as Santiago, Jamaica is an island that falls in the Caribbean Sea covering 10,990 square kilometers of land. It is the third largest island of the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus first put step on the island in 1494 at Dry Harbour, which is now known as "Discovery Bay". Columbus and his army fought the local residents of the region, Arawak and Taino, and established rule in the country as a Spanish colony. The Spaniards ruled the island for nearly two centuries. However, in 1655, the region was conquered by the British. At that time, the population of white and black in the island was almost equal. However, in the latter years, the blacks grew in number. The country became fully independent in 1962. The population of Jamaica is nearly 2.8 million and is divided into 3 historic counties that have 14 parishes. The counties do not bear any uniformity in the governing and administrative rules.
Jamaica has been a subject of neglect and torture ever since the Spanish conquered the region. The local people have faced immense hardships and have strived very hard to make their presence a respectable one in the eyes of world community. Today, their hard toil and sacrifices are fully acknowledged and people from all corners of the world visit this magical island year upon year.
Lying almost in the mid of the Caribbean Sea, Jamaica offers breathtaking views, sandy beaches and pampering resorts, quite like rest of the islands. The inhabitants of Arawak and Taino boast of culturally ornate landmarks and a rich history that dates back to 4000 BC. The tropical weather of the region supports a unique flora and fauna making Jamaica an eye-candy for even the weariest traveler. With its distinct link to Africa, Jamaica has a little of something for everyone. From the glistening reefs to mysterious wetlands with endangered crocodile species to the world's most aromatic coffee, Jamaica has immense variety that keeps the visitors asking for more. A pleasant year-round weather with an average of 20 Celsius on the mercury makes it convenient for the visitors to set out to this destination and spent their leisure time. The famous "Blue Mountains," again with pleasant weather conditions, are a treat for trekkers and mountaineers. Tourist attractions include Runaway Beach, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio, Blue Mountains, Kingston, Port Royal, Dunn's River Falls and Blue Lagoon.
Jamaica can be visited at any time of the year owing to its idyllic climatic conditions. The summers are comparatively warmer, whereas the winters offer a blazing sun during daytime and cool nights. The country gets an average rainfall of 1980mm with variations depending upon the landscape of the region. The rainy season starts from mid May up till November with heaviest downpours during the months of May, June, October and November. However, the rain only falls for a short period and is followed by sunshine. Since Jamaica lies in Caribbean's hurricane belt, the region sees frequent storms. Hurricanes are known to hit the region from June to November. August and September are the peak months during this season.
